Danny Willett - Masters 2016 Champion

The Masters in Augusta never seem to let golfing fans around the world down and this year was no different. Seeming like it could become a boring Sunday, with a certain victory for Spieth after a brilliant front nine on the cards, saw him command a 5 shot lead. Nobody could predict what would happen when Spieth approached the treacherous par 3 12th hole. One of the most dangerous holes at Augusta, Spieth found the water with a ‘fat’ tee shot he had no choice but to use the drop zone. With a wedge in hand the ball barely made it off the fairway and found the water again, staring a Master collapse of historic nature in the face his next found the bunker, an up and down from there saw Spieth take a QUADRUPLE BOGEY and completely relinquish his lead at the 80th Masters.

With the chasing pack being made aware of the Spieth collapsed on the 12th, they knew the tournament was far from over. The likes of Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Danny Willett all looked like contenders at this late stage of play. With Johnson not finding that touch on the greens that sees him come up short at so many majors, Westwood faltering after a chip in eagle, it was Danny Willett who was taking his chances, with sublime touch around the greens and rolling in some fantastic putts he was strolling up the 18th at Augusta with the extremely rare luxury of a three shot lead on the last day of play. He was excused for a tentative two putt par on the 72nd hole of the tournament to shoot a 67 and become the clubhouse leader.

A late birdie charge from Spieth saw the faintest hopes crushed when he missed the chance to get within 2 shots at the par 3 16th. Resigned to one of the greatest chokes in Masters history he looked understandably deflated coming up the last. With the emotions taking their toll he took a moment to crouch down, with head in hands to realise what had just happened.

Ending with a par, it was sealed that Danny Willet would become the 2016 Masters Champion and only the second Englishman to win after three time winner Nick Faldo. An amazing final day at Augusta with a worthy winner!
