Rory McIlroy has changed his putting grip ahead of the
WGC-Cadillac tournament in Florida this week, going back to the left hand low
technique that he used in his rookie year, to try and regain some much needed
form on the greens.
Using the new technique this week, he said " It's a drill
I've been doing for a while, I feel like it's something I'm going to stick
with, regardless of what the outcome is this week or next week".
Having missed the cut at last week’s Honda Classic and with the
Masters fast approaching in April could this be the change he needs to kick
start the season?
Speaking about the putting technique McIlroy noted that "I
feel like my left hand controls my putting stroke and I felt over the past few
weeks my right hand was becoming a little bit too dominant." He added that
"It's one of those things where the drill started to feel a little bit
better than the real thing, so I'm just going to stick with it."
McIlroy, prior to the start of the WGC, is way below the standard
he would be looking for on the greens. After his four events so far this season
the Northern Irishman is 189th on
the tour for strokes gained putting. The putts per round puts him way down at
169th averaging 29.71
a round. Not the ideal start for the world number three. With these stats you
can see why he felt a change was needed.
Maybe this can be the change that takes Rory back to the summit of
the Golf World Rankings, and to the top of the leaderboards in this seasons
major championships, only time will tell. The first test, coming this week, on
the undulating greens at the WGC Cadillac, taking place at the Trump owned Blue
Monster Course in Doral, Florida.
